Please proud of other's success

Below is the link from a university in United States of America.

Being the first Burmese to the university, my friend, Lin Myat, was interviewed by the officials from the school and became popular among the students of the university.

Being proud to be one of his friends, I shared this link with friends in Burma and in US and got the following feedbacks.

1st friend: dont' know that word

me: pessimistic?
1st friend: nope. it is not. think of what you would say under this condition. that is why
it is not surprising.
it has nothign to do with being pessimistic
me: are you not proud of being Burmese?
1st friend: it has nothing to do with it, i presume. cos it is about being proud of burmese and stuff i mean not about

For the convenience of my friends, I keep his name secret.

me: okay... I am sorry if I bother you

I am not saying that all Burmese people are not happy of others' success or popularity. However, I would like to see people to be envious and acknowledge other people's success while working hard to gain more success than those who have gain achievements.
